In 2009, with the increasing reduction in fixed to mobile call charges from the fixed line telephone companies the GSM Gateway is being used less for Least Cost Routing and is now enjoying even more popularity with the introduction of Mobile Extension. The Mobile Extension is a common feature of many new telephone systems that allows calls to the PBX to be redirected to an external telephone number and allows the call to be answered at either the local PBX extension or the remote extension, which makes it ideal for the modern, flexible and mobile workforce. Using traditional landlines the cost of the diverted call was 7ppm to 12ppm depending upon the charges of the telecoms company, but by using a GSM gateway to direct the mobile extension calls, and using a mobile phone tariff that allows Free Calls between users on the same call plan, then the moble extension can be used for a low, fixed monthly fee.
